Episode 144. The Inquisition (2)
“Are you saying I am your instructor?”
Ethan looked surprised at Jared’s suggestion.
I never thought that he would ask me to be his instructor.
Naturally, I thought that I would take the students as talents for the Inquisition. The Inquisition is currently short on manpower in many ways due to the followers of the moon.
If that was the reason, he was thinking of recommending another student rather than his three disciples.
‘It’s dangerous to fight the Moon Followers in this state. It’s not the time yet.’
There is no better place to gain practical experience, but it is also a place with high risk.
The students, whose skills were still imperfect and whose emotions were immature, were not in a position to fight against the vicious followers of the moon.
So, I was thinking of making them give up by gently rejecting them or recommending other talent.
‘It would be better if it were like this.’
But this changes things.
Jared smiled as Ethan looked puzzled.
“I know this is a sudden suggestion, Mr. Ethan, but there is a reason I have to make this suggestion to you.”
“What is the reason?”
Ethan asked back, pretending not to know.
“The Inquisition is currently in a difficult situation in many ways, Mr. Ethan. You probably have a rough idea of what we are doing. We are currently fighting the so-called Moon Followers, who follow Mother Moon. Unlike other pseudo-religions, these Moon Followers came from the Magic Empire and are stronger than we thought. At first, we thought the fight would be easy, but as it has become prolonged, many Inquisitors have been injured or retired.”
Jared explained the situation with a pitiful expression.
A follower of the moon from the Magic Empire.
There was talk that the Inquisition was having a hard time because of the Moon Followers who were stronger than expected.
The story is that while the Inquisition currently has many veterans, they are severely understaffed due to the Moon Followers’ unexpected power and obsession.
“There are quite a few dead comrades. That’s why we have been continuously recruiting new Inquisitors… … .”
Basically, the Inquisitor had to be exceptionally skilled. In particular, there were many followers of the Moon who attacked in various ways, so outstanding skills were needed to deal with them.
Therefore, the Inquisition supplemented its lack of troops with those who were renowned in the Knights Templar and the Mercenary Corps for their devotion and faith in religion.
In addition, I also selected those who have a strong hatred for the followers of the moon. Even if they lack skill, if they have a desire for revenge against the followers of the moon, they will be useful in many ways.
Even though we were recruiting people like that, a problem arose.
There is no one to teach the new recruits.
Everyone’s skills are fine, but fighting as an Inquisitor is a different matter.
“Until a few years ago, we had a veteran instructor, but he too has retired due to old age. We have been looking for a successor ever since… … but it has not been easy to find the right person.”
In such a situation, new interrogators continued to be accepted, and proper training was not possible.
I tried sending in the sunflowers a few times, but since I didn’t learn from a proper instructor, they often got seriously injured.
It would be a problem if the chicks that were painstakingly selected died. However, if they were not deployed, they would just be idle personnel, so it was a huge loss for Jared.
“Although they are rookies, they have a lot of experience, so it would be difficult to teach them the techniques of our interrogators with just a cursory education. They each have their own habits that they have developed in the field.”
“So that’s why you asked me to do it.”
“Yes, I thought that if you were Mr. Ethan who taught those two students, you would have no problem teaching our rookies. I have a shameless request, but could you come to our Inquisition as a temporary instructor?”
Ethan closed his mouth for a moment, pretending to think.
‘This is an opportunity to create a debt to the Inquisition.’
Even apart from the fame and achievements, the offer was acceptable.
‘The Inquisition is connected to the Saint.’
Still, Ethan folded his arms. It was an offer he was going to accept anyway, but it was basic to extract as much benefit as possible.
“Shall we hear the conditions?”
* * *
The state religion of the Holy Empire was a religion called the Holy Rite.
This Holy Light sect worshipped the goddess of mercy, Holy Light.
The Inquisition was centered around these doctrines of the Holy Light and aimed to deal with heresy that went against the Goddess’s love.
Because it was the Inquisition that was directly under the Emperor and at the same time influenced by the Holy Light Church.
‘Being indebted to the Inquisition is ultimately the same as being indebted to the Holy Light Church.’
If you owe money to the Holy Light Church, your chances of meeting the Saint will increase.
‘It’s not huge, but it’s not something to be ignored either.’
The priority is to somehow increase the possibility of meeting the saint.
Ethan accepted the temporary instructor position after being presented with several conditions by Jared.
Certainly, I felt very comfortable with the conditions I was given, perhaps because I had verified Ethan’s skills.
“I never thought you would refuse money.”
“Please use that money to deal with the Moon followers at the Inquisition.”
“I will definitely tell you that Mr. Ethan donated. And I will process and pay the money as soon as the conditions you mentioned are met.”
Ethan donated the exact amount of money Jared had offered. He had plenty of money anyway.
‘Because the purpose is to create debt.’
Instead, I asked for materials that could be obtained from the Inquisition.
‘Holy Light Seongsu.’
As befitting their name as the Inquisitors, they were supplied with a considerable amount of holy water containing the power of the goddess through the Holy Light Church.
Ethan planned to use the holy water as an ingredient in a herbal medicine.
‘Basically, items imbued with the power of a god are of high grade. When used as materials, the probability of obtaining a high grade item increases.’
It meant that there were many useful aspects.
After finishing the negotiation, the two headed straight to the branch of the Inquisition in the nearby territory.
* * *
“Welcome, Master Ethan. This is the Errant branch of the Holy Empire’s Inquisition.”
There was a branch of the Inquisition in the territory of Errant, a territory quite far from the Marquisate of Rond.
Although not as grand as the Academy, the branch of the Inquisition was also quite grand.
Right next to the branch was a church of the Holy Light Church. Its pointed spire seemed to pierce the sky, and it was impressive.
“Please come in.”
The two interrogators guarding the main gate greeted Jared.
‘It’s definitely cool.’
A tight-fitting uniform and hat, and even the badge of the Inquisition pinned to the chest.
As the saying goes, a person is made of a certain place, and their clothes made them look completely different.
“Mr. Ethan, please make these newbies into people in your own way. All I ask is that they do their part.”
Jared said.
“But you must be careful. The new recruits we have selected this time are very rough. The Moon Followers attack in various ways, so we deliberately selected only rough ones.”
In fact, Jared had many worries.
Ethan has a definite talent. He’s clearly great at teaching people.
But the problem was that he was a teacher at the academy.
Those selected this time have been working in the rough front lines, so their level is completely different from that of the students.
So, if a teacher from the academy were to teach them, there would be a strong rejection reaction.
Perhaps, even though Jared brought him, he would ignore him and refuse to teach him.
“Don’t worry. The Academy has a lot of self-restraint. You can’t treat young students roughly.”
“I feel a little relieved to hear that. Well, then please take this for now.”
Jared took a bundle of parchments out of his bosom and handed it to Ethan.
It was a fairly heavy bundle of parchment.
“This is a manual that records the basic formation and attack methods of the Inquisitors. They use the mace as their main weapon, and basically pursue a three-person team. The three Inquisitors complement each other… … .”
Jared explained in detail and handed Ethan a parchment that was over ten pages long.
“You don’t have to start training right away. It will take quite some time to get used to it.”
The parchment Jared handed over contained a description of the general attack patterns of the Inquisition. As the Inquisition had a long history, the volume was quite extensive.
“Because it was written by a veteran instructor, there will be many parts that are excessively omitted. Since he was such a veteran, there will be parts that you may not understand. I will interpret those parts separately.”
First, you must fully understand this extensive Inquisitor training manual before you can train new Inquisitors.
Jared had planned to introduce Ethan to the new interrogators during that time to ease their resistance.
He is not a teacher at any other academy, but at the prestigious Ibeka Academy.
This is a level that anyone can teach.
“Well, when would you be able to start training right away?”
Ethan was reading the parchment Jared had handed him carefully. He was so focused that his expression was extremely murderous.
Jared opened his mouth slightly as he looked at Ethan’s expression.
I felt like I had really brought the right person.
Ethan scanned the parchment once and held up three fingers.
“It’ll take about three weeks. As expected, I’ve been looking into it since the department exchange. Then, I’ll show you to your accommodations. Let’s unpack and have a meal first!”
Ethan shook his head.
“Oh, I misunderstood. Three weeks is definitely a short time. I have to learn it well before I can teach it. 30 days. A month, that should be enough. First, there are veteran interrogators on missions, so let’s have them stop those Moon Followers… .”
Ethan shook his head once more.
“Do you need more time? If not… … .”
Jared looked momentarily flustered and made a face as if to say, “No way.”
“Is 3 days enough!?”
It’s ridiculous.
What was written in the textbook could be said to be the essence of the history of the Inquisition. In fact, even a month was a relatively short period of time in Jared’s opinion.
But 3 days?
3 days is a bluff. It was definitely a bluff.
“There’s plenty of time, Mr. Ethan. There’s no need to rush… … .”
But even at the mention of three days, Ethan shook his head.
“Give me 30 minutes. I need that much time to really get used to it.”
Jared opened his mouth in shock at those words.
What was brought was not a teacher, but a monster.
