Episode 66. Lessons with Pension (1)

Meals with teachers could be considered the most important element of academy life.

‘I need to get rid of the noise.’

Problems arise when someone who should be getting the spotlight doesn’t, especially if they’re the grandson of someone as famous as Sir Ron Ramsdale.

The problem was that there was another bloodline of this celebrity.

‘Iris Paqueta.’

Both are obsessed with performance.

So, if we left it like this, it was clear that he would become hostile towards Ethan.

Even though Ethan didn’t cause any major harm to the two, he ended up like that because he was swayed by the opinions of those around him.

It was clear that this would have a negative impact on Ethan.

‘The best thing is to make them take my side.’

If you scratch and create a dent in your limited lifespan and an unexpected threat arises, that’s the end of it.

‘It’s okay if not everyone is on my side.’

It’s okay if you don’t become an ally. It’s also beneficial to remain neutral without becoming an enemy.

The dinner table prepared with that in mind was quite effective. Since both Shiron and Iris were elites, Ethan’s words seemed to have resonated even more with them.

“I didn’t know you had such a grand goal.”

Nadia seemed to have taken quite a liking to Ethan.

“Let’s have a drink together later and talk more about that goal!”

“Okay, then later.”

Ethan smiled and answered Nadia.

“Okay, then.”

It’s about time. The Dean of the Faculty of Magic has probably found Hasen’s resignation letter and is probably looking for a replacement by now.

“Now that there’s no one to be jealous of, I guess I’ll take on one more class.”

* * *

“Ha, that’s ridiculous. You’re just going to write a letter of resignation like this and leave?”

The Dean of the Faculty of Magic clicked his tongue.

I never thought that Hassen Little would submit his resignation. He was a teacher who was doing a good job.

“If this is the case, there will be no one to teach the class. It’s a class that is too difficult to be taught by a new teacher.”

Hassen Little, who was teaching the Alchemy class in the Faculty of Magic, was teaching the potion making class.

Potions making was one of the more difficult subjects in alchemy classes.

Potions weren’t something you could make just by throwing ingredients together.

It was important to combine the ingredients and add them at the optimal timing.

Above all, if I didn’t understand each material, I couldn’t even teach the class properly.

However, it was difficult to leave it to another teacher. Other teachers were currently teaching appropriate classes, so I couldn’t add another burden to them.

“Hmm.”

The Dean of the Faculty of Magic thought for a moment. Swordsmanship and new teachers came to his mind.

I heard that a new teacher in the swordsmanship department filled his class with 75 students.

There was even talk that the evaluation was so good that all 75 students were concentrating on the class.

“The training center is bustling. It seems like the new teachers are trying to do something this year.”

The Dean of the Faculty of Magic pushed up his glasses. He was thinking about assigning this difficult class to the new teachers.

“It’s not just the swordsmanship that brings in talented people. We also have some pretty good people coming to our side.”

Nadia von Zernkastel and Iris Paqueta also joined the Faculty of Magic. Both of them had good backgrounds and were outstanding in their skills.

It may be difficult at first, but if you focus and prepare for about two weeks, you will be able to teach a pension class.

“It may be difficult to achieve good results.”

The dean hesitated for a moment over which of the two new teachers to assign the class to.

“Should I leave it to Nadia? This is more suitable for alchemy class.”

The Dean of the Faculty of Magic summoned Nadia.

“Did you call, Dean?”

“Ms. Nadia, how is your new class?”

“Oh, it’s fun! The students seem to follow along well in my classes, and I also enjoy teaching.”

“Do you have some free time?”

“Um, why are you doing that?”

“Mr. Hassen Little suddenly resigned, so one class is now empty without a dedicated teacher.”

The Dean of the Faculty of Magic explained the situation to Nadia.

Nadia looked thoughtful for a moment.

“It’s okay if you don’t decide right away. There’s still some time before the next class, so think about it carefully and come back to me.”

“Oh, yes, I understand!”

* * *

And soon after, someone knocked on the door of the dean’s office.

“principal?”

The ones who came in were the principal and one teacher.

“Even Mr. Ethan?”

Ethan Wickers, the main character who is heating up the academy, followed the principal in.

“What brings you here?”

“Hassen Little resigned, right? He just ran away without even telling me.”

“I’m sorry, Principal. I also found out this morning when I received your resignation. I had no warning. I guess something came up that made it inevitable.”

The Dean of the Faculty of Magic looked embarrassed. This was definitely something that would make the Headmaster feel bad.

But the principal waved his hand as if it was okay.

“I didn’t come here to criticize you for that.”

“Is there a reason you came in with Mr. Ethan?”

“yes.”

The principal smiled faintly.

“Isn’t the class that Hassen Little was teaching the Alchemy class? The potion making class. It’s a pretty difficult class even among the Alchemy classes.”

“Yes, that’s right. I was just thinking about that class. Didn’t Mr. Ethan have such great results in the swordsmanship department? I was impressed that he could achieve such results even though he was a new teacher. So I also took this class… … .”

“Dean Dade.”

“Yes, principal.”

“How about leaving that class to Mr. Ethan?”

“yes?”

The words that came out of the principal’s mouth were unexpected.

What do you mean, leaving the lessons of the pension department to Ethan, a swordsman?

“Are you joking? I already recommended it to Miss Nadia.”

“I’m not joking.”

“If not, then why on earth? This is something I don’t understand. Is there something I’m missing?”

“Dean of the Faculty of Magic.”

Then Ethan opened his mouth.

“I’ve been thinking about this since I first entered the academy. I want to take on multiple classes regardless of the department. But then, Ms. Nadia came to me for advice. She said that she thought it would be difficult to take on one more class in her current situation, but she recommended it. So I told the principal that if Ms. Nadia refused, I would take on the class.”

The Dean of the Faculty of Magic stared at Ethan. It was certainly a thought a new teacher might have.

Because everyone comes in with big goals.

I want to become a representative teacher of the academy without being particularly engrossed in the subject.

But that was a very difficult task.

“Can you handle it, Mr. Ethan? This is not an easy task. Since you have taken the swordsmanship and exam, I admit that you are excellent at swordsmanship. I have heard about it and I agree with you, but that is because swordsmanship is your main specialty, right?”

The Dean of the Faculty of Magic spoke in a calm voice.

“Magic is a completely different matter. This class that you are going to teach, [Potion Making], is not a class that you can just take. The class that Mr. Hasen Little is currently teaching is impossible without extensive knowledge of potion making.”

The Dean of the Faculty of Magic gave a brief explanation of how Mr. Hassen Little taught his classes.

“Even if he left irresponsibly, I don’t doubt Mr. Hasen’s ability. He knew a lot about most of the herbs used to make potions. The shape, taste, and effects of the medicine. He could tell which herbs were used to make various potions just by looking at them. Without that level of knowledge, it would be impossible to conduct alchemy and classes.”

“Is that so?”

“I don’t understand why Mr. Ethan wants to teach that class. Isn’t the Understanding of Swords class already going well? It’s full with 75 students? I heard that a new teacher has never taught a class that is difficult for swordsmanship and satisfied students. It must be hard enough to lead that class, so why does he want to take on this one too?”

To be honest, the principal who was watching also thought the same thing.

When Ethan suddenly showed up at the principal’s office and made this suggestion, the principal thought he was drunk on success.

It was understandable that he would become cocky after coming in as the head of the class and having started his first class so successfully.

That’s why I tried to persuade him with nice words.

But instead, this side ended up being convinced.

“The principal should have stopped us.”

“How can I stop it?”

“Huh? What is that?”

Then Ethan walked over to the herb garden and the flower pots spread out on one side of the dean’s office.

“You said that it would be difficult to teach that class without extensive knowledge, right, Dean? Then, conversely, if you have that extensive knowledge, it would be possible to teach that class, right? Regardless of whether you belong to the magic or swordsmanship department.”

“Yes. If you have the knowledge to conduct the class, there is no problem. It’s not like there were no such cases.”

Ethan smiled at those words.

“Dreka herb, yule leaf, ibina herb, gold herb, red herb.”

Ethan started pointing to herbs from the left and named them. He smelled the herbs that were hard to see and quickly named them.

At first, the Dean of the Magic Department looked at him wondering what he was doing, but his expression gradually hardened. The name of the herb that Ethan mentioned and the herb he was referring to matched.

Every single one of them was correct.

‘It’s really interesting.’

That short mathematical formula was hard to memorize no matter how much I looked at it, but on the other hand, the names of the more than 100 heroes were easy to memorize. Even the skills they used were very easy to memorize.

Likewise, Ethan had memorized the various items on this board so well that he could just press them like a vending machine.

Even the principal was convinced by that knowledge.

It wasn’t a boast, but Ethan really had such vast knowledge that he would have been accepted to the magic department even if he had applied.

If I had applied to the magic department, I would have been second, if not first.

“Professor Ethan, why on earth did you apply to the swordsmanship department?”

It is not easy to distinguish herbs just by looking at them and smelling them. Except for some unique herbs, they all look and smell similar.

Especially when grown together like this, their scents overlap, making it virtually impossible to distinguish them by scent.

“I like swordsmanship better.”

“her.”

The Dean of the Faculty of Magic clicked his tongue.

If Ethan Wickers had come to the School of Magic, all the attention the Sword and Magic Department is getting now would have been directed here!

“So, what do you think, Dean Dade? Should we leave this class to Mr. Ethan?”

“……hmm.”

When I first heard it, I thought it was nonsense. But when I saw Ethan’s abilities in person, I couldn’t help but be moved.

“I’ll take care of everything else. You just have to give me permission.”

Even though they are the principals, the authority held by the deans of each department is not insignificant.

If we ignore the authority of the deans, the system will collapse.

That is why the principal had no choice but to wait for the dean’s decision.

But looking at his expression, it seemed like he already had the answer.

The Faculty of Magic and the Faculty of Knighthood are vying for the top spot in the Academy, and this year’s competition is being skewed to one side because of Ethan Whicus.

Then, Ethan should not be limited to being a teacher at the Knights’ College. He should just get on that spotlight.

The principal could roughly guess the thoughts of the Dean of the Magic Department, who was going round and round.

“I had a lot of concerns because it was a difficult class to leave to other teachers in our department. However, if Mr. Ethan has this kind of ability, I will leave it to him! However, there is a condition.”

The principal looked at Ethan.

It was because I thought I already knew what his conditions were.

“As you know, our students in the Faculty of Magic have strong pride. You know that, Mr. Ethan? Wizards naturally have strong pride. It’s strange for me, a wizard, to say this, but even among those wizards, our students are way beyond the pale.”

The dean shook his head.

“A non-major like you is teaching a class? They probably won’t even try to listen to the class properly. It would be hard to even conduct a two-hour class, let alone cooperate.”

Permission may be required. He certainly has the ability to lead the class. But whether the students will accept it is another matter.

Even though he could assign classes, it was Ethan’s job to convince the students to pay attention in class.

“It’s natural to exclude non-specialists. Even if I entered the swordsmanship department, I would doubt how much knowledge I have about herbal medicine.”

“That’s right. It might be hard to hold out. Don’t think about swordsmanship and class.”

The lessons with the swordsmanship class started with the premise that Ethan was the swordsmanship teacher.

That’s why I was able to lead the beginning well.

“Don’t worry about it. I will take responsibility and take care of it.”

“Let’s try to believe it.”

Ethan bowed his head.

“Thank you, Dean.”
